Seasons of Life; October 3, 2026
Psalm 71:9 Do not cast me away when I am old; do not forsake me when my strength is gone. This Psalm is not attributed, but it seems quite similar to several that are clearly ascribed to David. In verse 5 … Continue reading

Equality; April 12, 2026
Acts 2:41 Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand were added to their number that day. I don’t think I’d ever noticed it before, but here, rather than saying “men,” Luke says “souls.” (The Japanese says “people,” … Continue reading

Women; April 5, 2026
Luke 24:11 But they did not believe the women, because their words seemed to them like nonsense. It is hard for us to imagine how thoroughly women were looked down on in that society. In a court of law, a woman’s … Continue reading

Status; March 16, 2026
Matthew 23:12 “For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.” It’s interesting how much trouble we have following what Jesus says here. The Catholic practice of addressing priests as Father is in … Continue reading

Ministers; March 16, 2025
Ephesians 3:7 I became a servant of this gospel by the gift of God’s grace given me through the working of his power. For once, the NIV and the Japanese agree, and are different from the ESV. The ESV says, “a minister,” … Continue reading

Boasting; March 12, 2025
Galatians 6:14 May I never boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world. We’re still on the same theme as yesterday, with a little more explanation … Continue reading

Standards; November 29, 2024
Luke 16:15 He said to them, “You are the ones who justify yourselves in the eyes of others, but God knows your hearts. What people value highly is detestable in God’s sight.” This issue comes up again and again in the Bible. Human … Continue reading

Human Value; November 28, 2024
Luke 12:6-7 Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten by God. Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows. One of the … Continue reading

Treasure; November 20, 2024
Matthew 6:21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. This whole chapter is extremely familiar, to the point that I could just about quote it verbatim, but again, it contains deep truths that call for frequent … Continue reading
