Isaiah 40:28 Do you not know?
Have you not heard?
The Lord is the everlasting God,
the Creator of the ends of the earth.
He will not grow tired or weary,
and his understanding no one can fathom.
Verse 31 of this chapter is so famous, there’s a temptation to skip over the rest. However, this verse is fundamental to our world-view, our understanding of everything. Isaiah was addressing people in a polytheistic society. In those days, every nation had their own gods, so the people of Israel had to be reminded that Yahweh was different from all of those. That actually still exists today, but the biggest competitor to a Biblical world-view is the idea that there is no Creator at all, that everything is just chance. That is particularly dangerous, because it eliminates all objective basis for morality. If there is no Creator, then there is no accountability, and that’s precisely what makes that idea attractive to some people. Ignoring God is the first requirement for someone wanting to be a murderous dictator. That’s why Communism is so militantly atheistic. Islam puts a twist on that, positing a Creator but portraying Him as a murderous dictator Himself. That’s why they are so antisemitic and antichristian. In my understanding, the very name, Islam, means “submission.” That’s not the God of the Bible! That’s why leftists and Islamists are allies: they are both lies of the devil. Isaiah gives us a totally different picture, the one that culminates in John 3:16, providing meaning and salvation for all who will repent and believe. It is a very sad state of affairs that currently only a very small fraction of Americans hold a genuinely Biblical world-view, and that lies at the root of the majority of America’s problems. For that matter, it lies at the root of the world’s problems! This verse should be the foundation of how we look at everything. It certainly is the basis for the fear of the Lord, which in turn is the basis for genuine wisdom. (Proverbs 9:10) Every Christian should do an inventory of their world-view, and understand that without a firm foundation, everything else is fantasy.
This is the greatest heritage I received from my parents. Their world-view was Biblical and rock-solid. There was no lack of intellectual inquiry or academic discipline – my father received his PhD at 23 – but it was all on the foundation of what Isaiah says here. I was raised to let my imagination range far and wide, and it did, but there was always this foundation to support it all. Today, I can’t imagine what my life would be like if I didn’t have this foundation. It’s the reason I can rest, relax, and rejoice, just as He has told me personally to do, because He is more real to me than I am to myself. I exist only because He does! That makes me accountable to Him in every detail, but that’s not a burden, because He enables me to do everything He asks of me. It is the greatest privilege and joy to be used by Him to do His will, touching people with His love and grace, so that they too may be drawn to repentance and faith for their salvation. However long He keeps me here, I’m to be active as His agent, because He is my everything.
Father, thank You for this reminder. May the world-view You have given me be contagious indeed, spreading far and wide, for the salvation of multitudes and for Your glory. Thank You. Hallelujah!
