Telling Others; October 4, 2026

Psalm 71:18 Even when I am old and gray,
do not forsake me, my God,
till I declare your power to the next generation,
your mighty acts to all who are to come.

I get the impression that the Psalmist wasn’t yet old when he wrote this, so he was asking for enough time to be able to proclaim God’s greatness before he was completely white-headed. The point, however, is a valid one. We aren’t to keep the things God does to ourselves, but rather inform others of them so that they too may know Him. Today’s message is on Knowing God, so this is a very timely reference. No individual has time to encounter God in all the ways possible, so it’s important to learn from one another’s experiences. Actually, it is a huge blessing to be able to tell others about what God has done for us. We might hesitate to do so for fear of being seen as bragging. Some people do brag, but in that case, their focus is entirely off. We need to realize that everything God does for us is entirely grace; we don’t deserve any of it. When our focus is properly on God, then our recounting of what He has done will only bring glory to Him.

This is the impetus behind my current project of writing my autobiography. I have been urged to do so for many years, but have always demurred because of not wanting to brag. However, I realize that my life is entirely a story of God’s grace, and that story deserves to be told. I have written quite a few pages, but keep getting sidetracked, and progress has been slow. When I write every morning like this for my devotions, it shouldn’t be that difficult! (My software informs me that I’ve written 169970 words in my devotions so far this year.) There are many things I do that are far less important than telling about God’s grace! The hair on my head, interestingly, isn’t particularly white (though it’s far thinner than it once was) but my beard has been pure white for a number of years. I need to get with the program and tell as many as possible what God has done for me!

Father, thank You for this reminder. Help me follow through! My recent awareness of angina has scared my wife and daughters, and it should certainly motivate me to stop killing time. May I use each moment You give me to do Your will on Your schedule, so that many more may know You, repent, and believe for their salvation. Thank You. Hallelujah!
