Truth; September 18, 2024

Job 12:13 “To God belong wisdom and power;    counsel and understanding are his.” In this chapter, Job is rattling off truisms about God to his three friends, who have been using such truisms to attack him. It’s not that any of these … Continue reading →

Truth; August 17, 2024

Posted on August 18, 2024 by jgarrott

Romans 1:18 The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of people, who suppress the truth by their wickedness. From here through the end of the chapter sounds remarkably like a description of modern … Continue reading →

Speaking the Truth; July 27, 2024

Posted on July 28, 2024 by jgarrott

Amos 5:10 They hate him who reproves in the gate,    and they abhor him who speaks the truth. Prophets and truth-speakers often get a rough reception! Of all the Old Testament characters I like Isaiah the best, but reliable legend has it that … Continue reading →

Walking in Truth; July 9, 2024

Psalm 86:11 Teach me your way, Lord,    that I may rely on your faithfulness;give me an undivided heart,    that I may fear your name. This is a prayer that every believer can and should pray. We do know God’s way in general terms, because the … Continue reading →

Proclaiming the Word; May 27, 2024

Posted on May 28, 2024 by jgarrott

2 Timothy 4:2 Preach the Word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage–with great patience and careful instruction. This, along with verse 5, is rather heart-wrenching when you realize that it was written shortly before … Continue reading →

Quarrels; May 26, 2024

Posted on May 27, 2024 by jgarrott

2 Timothy 2:14 Keep reminding them of these things. Warn them before God against quarreling about words; it is of no value, and only ruins those who listen. It strikes me that this section is getting down to the nitty … Continue reading →

Good News; April 29, 2024

Posted on April 30, 2024 by jgarrott

Luke 3:18 And with many other words John exhorted the people and preached the good news to them. I think it’s important to note that John, who was famous for his tart tongue, calling people vipers in verse seven, was … Continue reading →

Authority; April 26, 2024

Posted on April 27, 2024 by jgarrott

Mark 1:22 The people were amazed at his teaching, because he taught them as one who had authority, not as the teachers of the law. I find this a fascinating comment. Jesus not only taught as someone with authority, He … Continue reading →

Jeremiah 25:7 “But you did not listen to me,” declares the Lord, “and you have provoked me with what your hands have made, and you have brought harm to yourselves.” A major reason for the study of history is the … Continue reading →

Generational Transfer; February 19, 2024

Posted on February 20, 2024 by jgarrott

Joshua 24:24 And the people said to Joshua, “We will serve the Lord our God and obey him.” This passage is certainly an illustration of the truth that virtually everything of real value is only one generation away from dissolution. … Continue reading →
