The Result of Commitment; May 30, 2017

1 Samuel 2:2 “There is no-one holy like the Lord;
there is no-one besides you;
there is no Rock like our God.”

This Psalm is evidence of the genuineness of Hannah’s dedication of her son Samuel to God. The very difficulty of her following through with what she had promised brought her to a beautiful depth of worship that has blessed countless generations since. This particular verse has been set to music, and I have liked it very much ever since I first heard it. We are complex beings, but God knows every detail of us. (Matthew 10:30) He knows what has the potential to draw us closer to Him. I tell people frequently that God, being Love, will never allow anything in our lives that cannot be used for our good, (Romans 8:28) but whether it will have His intended result often depends on our response to whatever it is. If we respond wrongly, even things that the world would see as good can turn out very badly. Winning the lottery is a good case in point. From what I have heard, only those who are committed to using everything they have for God are genuinely blessed by such a sudden influx of money, and many are essentially destroyed by it. Hannah responded to her infertility by crying out to God, and then she responded to her conception and motherhood by giving God the credit and returning her son to Him. As a result, she became an example and a blessing to all believers since.

I’ve had a variety of experiences in my life, which could be said of anyone. My experiences haven’t been as extreme as those of some people, but whether big or small, what matters is my response. If I will keep my focus on God, then He will use everything to shape and grow me into whom He created me to be. If I focus on myself instead, then I will become a caricature of what He intends, losing the blessings He has stored up for me. I am called and commissioned to minister to others, but there is always the danger of becoming a petty tyrant, bossing others around for the sake of my own ego. That produces losers all the way around! I am to rejoice at the privilege of serving my Lord. Like Paul, my concern is that Christ be formed in each of my spiritual children. (Galatians 4:19) I am to speak the truth in love, and never in pride. I have a real risk of taking pride in my Bible knowledge. That doesn’t negate the truths of the Bible, but it hinders their effectiveness in my life and the lives of those who hear me. I am to rejoice in God’s incredible grace and mercy that He would allow such a one as I am to serve Him.

Father, thank You indeed for Your grace and mercy. Thank You for getting me through the last of the days I was dreading, and for all You did in that period. I’m sure it was more than I am right now aware of. Thank You for Your plans for today. I pray that each person with whom I interact would be touched by Your Spirit through me, so that the lies of the devil may be exposed and cast down, and people set free to draw close to You. (2 Corinthians 10:4) May we all together grow in Your grace, for Your glory. Thank You. Hallelujah!

Bargaining with God; May 29, 2017

1 Samuel 1:27-28 “I prayed for this child, and the Lord has granted me what I asked of him. So now I give him to the Lord. For his whole life he shall be given over to the Lord.” And he worshiped the Lord there.

Hannah was fully serious in her vow to the Lord, and she proved it. Some very good things came from that, but there were some negatives as well. Samuel grew to be one of the pivotal figures in Jewish history, anointing both Saul and David as kings and in the process proclaiming some fundamental truths. (eg 1 Samuel 15:23) However, the only father figure he had in growing up was Eli, who did a bad job raising his own sons. As a result, Samuel’s sons weren’t fit to follow him in leading Israel. (1 Samuel 8:1-5) That fits right into the pattern of “no success without a successor.” However, Hannah was doubtless long gone by that point, and she was certainly true to her word. Humanity has a long history of people promising God things if He will bail them out of whatever fix they are in, but the vast majority don’t follow through as thoroughly as Hannah did. There are problems from the outset with trying to bargain with God. That we would do so betrays our lack of understanding of Him and of ourselves. He is more than worthy of our total devotion even if He never grants a single request we make, but the flip side of that is, if we are that devoted to Him, our requests are going to be in line with His will. We need to take Him completely seriously, knowing that we are totally dependent on His grace and mercy. However, that isn’t all dull and dark, because such knowledge of God will also teach us His love and grace, and that is joyous indeed.

I don’t think I’ve ever tried to bargain with God, but that doesn’t mean I’ve always responded rightly to Him. I continue to grow in my knowledge of and love for Him, demonstrated by greater obedience. I am learning that it is just as Jesus said: if I love Him, I will do what He says. (John 14:15) I desire that everyone to whom I minister would grow in the grace and knowledge of God, but I’ve got to give them to Him as thoroughly as Hannah gave Samuel to God. I am not to be irresponsible, but at the same time I must remember that my flock belongs to Him and not to me. The balance there can be difficult at times! Like Paul I am not to hold back anything in teaching and training them, (Acts 20:20) but at the same time I must remember that my strength and wisdom aren’t going to get the job done. I can’t carry them, but God can, and He can use me in the process.

Father, thank You for Your plans, just as Takahiro preached on yesterday, and for including me in them. Thank You for getting us through the packed day yesterday, and for the reminder of my own fallibility. Help me remember not to eat stuff that far out of date again! Thank You that it seemed to be a good experience for all involved, and that my food poisoning didn’t keep me from any of my responsibilities. There’s a lot of physical labor on the schedule today, and not as much physical strength on my part as I would like. Help me listen to You accurately and let Your strength operate through me, for Your glory. Thank You. Praise God!

Being Used by God; May 28, 2017

1 Samuel 1:17 Eli answered, “Go in peace, and may the God of Israel grant you what you have asked of him.”

We know from succeeding passages that Eli was not a very good priest, but he occupied the office, and was here operating in it. He was moved with compassion and spoke a blessing that was appropriately God-centered. God acted according to that blessing, and not only Hannah but every believer since has been blessed as a result. The New Testament speaks of all believers as priests (1 Peter 2:9, which is this church’s Verse for the Year) but we tend to disqualify ourselves in our minds, focusing on our imperfections and failures, and think we could never operate as God’s instruments. That’s a lie of the devil! Even Caiaphas, the High Priest who worked actively to get Jesus crucified, spoke a valid prophecy. (John 11:49-51) The only perfect person ever to live was Jesus. We need to stop thinking that our negatives are greater that God. God wants to use us, and He will use any believer who is yielded to Him. If God used Eli and Caiaphas, He certainly can use us! There’s no room for conceit here, because all the power is of God and not of us, but we must not refuse God permission to use us for His purposes and His glory.

This is a truth that I have sought to convey throughout my ministry, both in the US and Japan, but with minor success. Society attacks and ridicules anyone who says they hear from God, much less act as His agent. Recently a person in the US was reprimanded by the school where they worked simply for saying they would pray for a co-worker. I have had people decline my offer to pray for them, but most often people are grateful. I am not to stop seeking to speak and act as God’s representative, and I am not to stop teaching believers that they they have as much potential to be used by Him as I do. The devil doesn’t want believers to know that, but I am to stand firm against him, not in my own strength but in God’s. God has chosen to use people. We may not understand why, but we need to believe it, and hold ourselves available.

Father, thank You for Your grace. Thank You for the privilege of being Your agent in a wide variety of situations. May I be more consistent in my availability and obedience! We have a huge day today, with a wedding here on top of all our usual Sunday activities. Help me not try to get through the day in my own strength, but rather rest, relax, and rejoice in You, taking one thing at a time and delighting to be Your agent in it, for Your glory. Thank You. Praise God!

By God Alone; May 27, 2017

Judges 7:2 The Lord said to Gideon, “You have too many men for me to deliver Midian into their hands. In order that Israel may not boast against me that her own strength has saved her, …”

This verse should be a comfort and encouragement to any church in Japan! In America, a church of 100 is considered small, but in Japan, that’s a pretty big church. However, the issue is not numbers, but pride. The bigger the group, the easier it is for it to do something, even if it has nothing to do with the will of God. I’m reminded of a group of Chinese pastors who were able to visit the US some years ago. Dealing with persecution from a capricious government at home, they found American churches to be very different. As they were preparing to leave, they were asked what their biggest impression was. They replied, “We are amazed that you can accomplish so much without the Holy Spirit.” What a condemnation! The one “advantage” of active persecution is that it forces reliance on God. We are so quick to rely on ourselves and our own resources! God didn’t want that to happen, so He cut Gideon’s numbers to less than 1% of what he started with. That’s pretty drastic thinning! In the process He delivered a lesson that is repeated throughout the Bible, stated most clearly in Zechariah 4:6: “’Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit,’ says the Lord Almighty.” We sing that set to music, but too often we don’t really grasp it. We want to see what we’re depending on, and depend on what we can see. That’s not the way of God’s kingdom! We need to grasp, deep down to the core of our being, that man’s greatest power can’t compare with God, so we’d better not rely on man. Even physically, compared to the power of even a small star, man’s biggest hydrogen bomb is equivalent to a small burp, barely noticeable! God wants us to trust and depend on Him, so sometimes He takes away everything else.

Of course this applies to me. This church is no more than a small group fellowship, by American standards, even though we have our own building, by the grace of God. I am all too prone to look at our circumstances and fail to expect God to do great things. Cathy and I have the strong feeling that He is going to do some remarkable things in this fiscal year (April through March), but we don’t really know what. We need to be aware that it won’t be without opposition. Yesterday I was in an emotional funk such as I thankfully haven’t had in a long time, and for no logical reason. I need to submit to God and stand firm against all such attacks, because when I’m wobbly, that negatively affects those around me. I do have a packed schedule ahead of me, particularly tomorrow and the next day, but that’s no big deal for God, certainly. As He has told me to do, I need to rest, relax, and rejoice in Him, looking forward to what He’s going to do next. If I could do it on my own, I’d be tempted to steal His glory.

Father, thank You for this reminder. Thank You for yesterday, to pound it home to me that I can’t do it on my own. Thank You that it’s no big deal for You. May Your plans, for today, tomorrow, and each day, be fulfilled on Your schedule in Your way for Your glory. Thank You. Hallelujah!

God’s Strength; May 26, 2017

Judges 6:14 The Lord turned to him and said, “Go in the strength you have and save Israel out of Midian’s hand. Am I not sending you?”

This statement by the angel seemed totally absurd to Gideon because he didn’t recognize that he had any strength. The thing is, everything we have comes from God, so if He says we have it, we do, whether we recognize it or not. He never asks us to do anything for which He does not equip us, but we need to keep our eyes on Him for it to be fully operative. When we start depending on what we see as our own strength we are limited to the merely human, and that runs out in a hurry. When we are fully focused on God, then we become conduits for His strength, which is infinite. Sometimes God has to allow circumstances to make it clear to us that we have no strength on our own. He certainly had to do that with Paul, using some sort of physical problem in the process. (2 Corinthians 12:7-10) Jesus said very clearly, “Apart from me you can do nothing.” (John 15:5) That said, His grace is all we really need, (2 Corinthians 12:9) and we can do everything He calls us to do through Him and His power. (Philippians 4:13) Having said all of that, it’s still true that we often fail to recognize what God has already provided. I think that what is called for is expectant humility: knowing that He is the Source and He is enough. To the outside observer that can look like conceit, but it is the farthest thing from it. Rather, it is recognizing that God is bigger and greater and stronger than all of our weaknesses and failures, and He can use even us for His glory.

This, of course, applies to me, and it feels pretty timely at the moment. Right now I feel somewhat overwhelmed by all that is on the schedule for the next four days. On top of that, my digestion was acting up yesterday, and I don’t feel much physical strength. That’s all the more reason to rejoice, because God’s strength is demonstrated perfectly in my weakness. (2 Corinthians 12:9) I am to prepare, in terms of having things lined up to be used, but I am to trust Him to supply the wisdom, the skill, the strength, to do what needs to be done when and how it needs to be done. It’s all part of resting, relaxing, and rejoicing in Him, as He has told me to do. From a human perspective it is ironic that resting, relaxing, and rejoicing can be very active indeed! I need to let Him carry me through all that He calls me to do, for His pleasure and glory.

Father, thank You for this reminder and for how timely it is. I know Your truth; I just need to walk in it more fully. Help me be fully focused on each task as I do it, not being distracted by what is ahead. Thinking about it as a whole is why I feel overwhelmed! As the song says, help me indeed take one day at a time, indeed one step at a time, so that I may allow Your power to flow through me for Your glory. Thank You. Praise God!

Making Disciples; May 25, 2017

Josh 24:21-22 But the people said to Joshua, “No! We will serve the Lord.”
Then Joshua said, “You are witnesses against yourselves that you have chosen to serve the Lord.”
“Yes, we are witnesses,” they replied.

It is very clear that the people who were interacting with Joshua in this exchange were the elders, and not the entire nation. For one thing, it would have been logistically impossible for this to have happened with more than a few hundred people at most. That their commitment was real is evident from what it says a bit further on: “Israel served the Lord throughout the lifetime of Joshua and of the elders who outlived him and who had experienced everything the Lord had done for Israel.” (Joshua 24:31) These people could speak for themselves, but they couldn’t speak for others. They probably did a pretty good job of communicating the truths of God to their own families, but couldn’t ensure that others did that as well. We are back to the truth that the Church is always just one generation away from extinction. That’s why in the Great Commission Jesus said to “make disciples,” not “make converts.” (Matthew 28:18-20) A disciple will be self-replicating, leading others to faith and knowledge of Christ. We have a strong tendency to stop once a person is baptized, but that’s just the birth ceremony. That’s why we have so many infantile Christians running around, compromising with and being deceived by the world and the devil. We need to examine our own lives as to whether we are any better than that ourselves, and then strive not only to draw closer to Christ in grateful obedience but also to lead others to join us in that quest.

As a pastor, this is a description of my life. However, I too am tempted to just focus on me and not worry about whether others are drawing closer to God. How foolish! Doing that shows I’m not drawing closer to God myself, because if I’m focused on Him, I will have His heart for those around me. I deal a lot with issues of people being self-centered. I might go so far as to say that covers a majority of the issues I deal with in ministry. As easy as it is to see how damaging that is for others, I still tend to overlook it or excuse it in myself. I cannot force anyone to change, but I can follow Paul’s instructions: “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God.” (Colossians 3:16) I am to teach and admonish with the wisdom God provides, not relying on my own, which is no wisdom at all, speaking the truth in love so that people may be grounded in the truth in order to grow on their own, not always depending on someone else for their spirituality. In other words, I am to make disciples, just as Jesus said.

Father, this is my perennial quest. I rejoice in the successes, but they seem so few! Help me not focus on numbers, but on leading however many You give me to be self-replicating themselves. If we will do that, Your name will indeed be recognized as holy and Your kingdom come as Your will is done, for Your glory. Thank You. Hallelujah!

Choices; May 24, 2017

Joshua 24:15 “But if serving the Lord seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your forefathers served beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.”

The whole Bible is about choices, and nowhere is that more clear than in this verse. Whatever anyone says, free will is not an illusion. We try to deny the reality of free will only because if we were not free to choose, we would bear no responsibility or accountability for our choices. In some ways free will is a paradox, because God knows how we will choose before we make that choice simply because He is outside of time and is aware of it all at once. That’s where the whole matter of predestination comes in. I’m not sure Paul did us any favors by using that term! (Romans 8 and Ephesians 1) We are free to choose, but we bear the consequences of our choices. The only human being ever to make only righteous choices was Jesus. I sometimes wonder if He ever made poor choices that weren’t sinful, such as using the wrong tool in His work as a carpenter. That’s a pretty idle question, but we do need to remember that not all choices are matters of righteousness. Clothing choices, provided they are decent, aren’t a matter of righteousness, but they can certainly be wrong! Even so, we have to bear the consequences of choosing to wear stripes with polka dots, or whatever. If we will seek the Lord in all things, He will even guide us in things like clothing choices, perhaps by providing someone to give us good advice. It all comes down to the choice Joshua proclaims here, to serve the Lord. If that is our foundation, we don’t have to be anxious about any other choice.

Today is a remarkably appropriate day to be writing on this, because 48 years ago today, I chose to marry Cathy. (Actually, my choice was made in February, but May 24th was the day of our wedding.) It was a superb example of God’s grace, because at the time neither Cathy nor I was walking very close to the Lord. Our whole relationship has been a matter of choices, as it really is for every couple. I think that’s one reason Paul links marriage so closely to the relationship of Christ and the Church in Ephesians 5. Each of us had chosen someone else prior to our meeting, but God in His grace made it clear that those were not right choices, and then He brought us together. Actually, the day after our first date I wrote my parents that I had found the girl I wanted to marry, and we telephoned them with the news of our engagement before I had a chance to get their reply. I’m enormously grateful God enabled me to make that choice so firmly, and so quickly. I feel the choice of a spouse is the second most important choice we make, after the choice that Joshua expresses here. With that first choice in place, everything else follows.

Father, thank You for Your amazing grace. Thank You for choosing and using me. May I indeed fulfill every purpose for which You created and chose me, for Your glory. Thank You. Hallelujah!

God Fighting For Us; May 23, 2017

Joshua 23:10-11 “One of you routs a thousand, because the Lord your God fights for you, just as he promised. So be very careful to love the Lord your God.”

There is a distinction in Japanese here that clears up what I think is a common misunderstanding about this and similar passages. We are prone to think that if the Lord fights for us, we don’t have to fight at all. Sometimes that is indeed true, as in Exodus 14:14 and, perhaps most notably, 2 Chronicles 20:17. However, such cases are the exception rather than the rule. The Japanese grammar here makes it clear that the Lord fights on our behalf, rather that in our stead. If we didn’t have to fight at all, then why would this talk about one person routing a thousand? Like so many things in the spiritual realm, what is called for is our choice; we have to choose to fight. That’s why the devil tries so hard to convince us that “Resistance is futile” (to quote Star Trek). In Christ, that is absolutely, never, true. This past Sunday I preached on how the devil is afraid of believing Christians, and it was a true Word indeed. We need to believe that life in Christ is worth the fight, and take our stand in obedience to Him. When we do that, the devil indeed turns tail and runs, just as James said. (James 1:22)

I have certainly tasted this from all sides. I well remember a particular “besetting sin” that the devil kept reminding me of, and I kept falling into. It wasn’t until I really grasped that I was forgiven that I was able to shake loose of it. In other words, I had to receive the faith and hope God had for me, and choose to act accordingly. I can’t say that I’ve never been tempted with it again, or even that I’ve never stumbled since, but I can say that I have the victory, and I know that it’s because God is on my side, just as Joshua said. As a pastor, I deal with people who are just as weak as I was/am. I need to help them understand that God will supply all the strength they need if they will only choose to receive and apply it. Without our choice, it’s only potential and not actual. It’s the same way with the gifts of the Holy Spirit. He supplies them, but it is our choice whether to apply them. He might give a gift of prophecy, for example, but we have to choose to open our mouths, or perhaps write it down. Almost every time I have been used in prophecy I have only known the beginning when I started speaking, and I have been as surprised as those hearing me at what I have ended up saying. Sometimes I’ve had no idea at all, but just had the feeling that God wanted to say something, and He wanted to use me to express it. My words by themselves are of no particular benefit, but I’ve got to choose to speak if I want God to speak through me.

Father, this is an important point. As is so often the case, I had no idea I would write this, just from reading the passage. Help me choose to fight, to speak, to do Your works, knowing that You will do the “heavy lifting” if I will just make the choice to serve You. Thank You. Praise God!

Taking Possession; May 22, 2017

Joshua 18:3 So Joshua said to the Israelites: “How long will you wait before you begin to take possession of the land that the Lord, the God of your fathers, has given you?

Quite a few of the things God provides for us come under the same category as the land for the Israelites. That is, it’s God’s provision, but we have to be active in taking possession or we won’t have it. It is a well known but often ignored truth that we tend to devalue things we haven’t worked for. God is too good a Father to let that happen without a fight. Of course His grace and love are things we could never earn, but even there we have to choose to receive them. Why we put that choice off is sometimes a real mystery! We often dread the work involved in laying hold of certain things, but once we have them, we discover that the process of getting them was as valuable as the thing itself. I think these words of Joshua apply to many of us far more often than we would like to admit.

Of course this shoe fits me as well as it does anyone. I have a real tendency to spiritual – and physical – laziness, wanting God to hand me things rather than actively pursuing them. Sometimes that is wise, rejecting human ambition in favor of waiting on the Lord, but all too often it is simply inertia, failing to get moving. Right now I have two major projects that come under that category: finishing the book I started and implementing a regular tracting program in this part of town. I don’t know what God has for me personally in getting the book out, but I feel sure it will be a blessing to the Body of Christ. I don’t know when or whom or how many people God might bring in through the tracts, but if I don’t distribute them, I am denying those people an opportunity to enter God’s family for eternal life as His children. Yesterday God brought someone to this church whom we knew nothing about. He was baptized as a young man, but hasn’t been to church in 30 years. In his late 50s, he is hoping to be involved in active evangelism and ministry after his retirement. That’s not something we worked for, but I’ve got to be active in helping him grow spiritually so that he and we may take hold of that which God wants to provide, to him and to us. It looks like the feeling that God was going to change a lot of things in this fiscal year is certainly accurate! I am not to hang back, but move forward in faith and obedience on every front to indeed take hold of that which He has provided.

Father, yesterday was quite a day, not only with the man showing up but with people staying around until after 5, talking about the wedding coming up next week. Then there’s the man who’s been coming for years who confided to one believer that he wants to be baptized. He hasn’t worked up the courage to say it to me yet, but You have him firmly in hand! Thank You for all that You are doing. Help me indeed be active in my part, not running ahead or straying to the side but certainly not lagging behind. May Your will be done on Your schedule for Your glory. Thank You. Praise God!

Faith and Miracles May 21, 2017

Joshua 10:13-14 So the sun stood still,
and the moon stopped,
till the nation avenged itself on its enemies,
as it is written in the Book of Jashar.
The sun stopped in the middle of the sky and delayed going down about a full day. There has never been a day like it before or since, a day when the Lord listened to a man. Surely the Lord was fighting for Israel!

Of all the miracles in the Bible, the two that deal with the “movement” of the sun (here and 2 Kings 20:9-11) are the hardest to reconcile with current cosmology. We know very well that the sun seems to move, from our perspective, because of the rotation of the earth, so how could these things have happened as reported? The thing is, the geological record shows that various anomalies have occurred in the earth’s rotation, and the magnetic poles have swapped more than once. There are those who have pursued this particular issue, but I’m not one of them. The point is, nothing at all is impossible for God, just as He had Gabriel tell Mary. (Luke 1:37) Jesus even doubled down and said that in faith, nothing would be impossible for us! (Matthew 17:20) This is why Jesus praised childlike faith. We are too prone to let “grownup” objections rob us of trusting God. The more we know of how the world works usually, the less we tend to believe that God can make it work any other way. For adults, faith almost has to be the gift the Bible says it is. (1 Corinthians 12:9, Ephesians 2:8) The thing is, not believing God is actually a form of idolatry, because it is placing human intellect ahead of, and even above, God. It has been said that science is following God’s footprints. I like that, because all of creation points to the Creator, just as Paul said. (Romans 1:20)

I had the huge advantage of growing up in a home that valued both faith and science. I have both scientists and ministers in my family tree. At no point did my parents deny science, but they always made it clear that science is incomplete, whereas God is infinite and perfect. As far as the Bible is concerned, I am fully aware of “textual criticism” and the like, but I am convinced that God caused the Bible to be written, and He is more than capable of guiding the process. The fact that He still speaks to me through it daily, as many times as I’ve read it, certainly confirms, to me at least, that it is supernatural. As I comment from time to time, I am more aware than many of the difficulties of translation from one language to another, but there too God can and does guide. If God can change the rotation of the earth to benefit His children, and I believe He did, then He certainly can transmit His Word down through the centuries, and He can meet every need I could ever have.

Father, thank You for this reminder. Even as well as I know this is true, I still default to humanistic, intellectual solutions too much of the time. I know that You have the right solution all of the time, but I don’t act like I know it. Help me trust You fully, not demanding that you change the rotation of the earth, but not letting my unbelief get in the way of anything You want to do, for Your glory. Thank You. Hallelujah!
