Psalm 94:9 Does he who implanted the ear not hear?
Does he who formed the eye not see?

This is a major reason people try to take refuge in atheism. They are “weirded out” by the thought that God sees and hears everything. This is actually a comfort to those who seek to please God and rely on Him, but it is a very uncomfortable concept for anyone who is in rebellion against God. However, what we think about things doesn’t change reality. The thing is, God is not only absolutely knowing and absolutely powerful, He is also absolutely holy, absolutely just, (as in justice) and absolutely loving. That’s why He is to be feared, as the Old Testament says so many times. These days we try to seize on the last part, loving, and tend to forget that He is also holy and just. That is dangerous! We are indeed made righteous by faith and not works, but we dishonor God if we act as though what we do doesn’t matter. He sees not only our outward actions, but also the thoughts and intents of our hearts. (Hebrews 4:12) That’s why we need to “take every thought captive to make it obedient to Christ,” (2 Corinthians 10:5) because thoughts precede actions, and God sees them both. Daydreaming about sin is a dangerous activity indeed! When we have a healthy fear of God (which is necessary for an accurate love for God) then we will be quick to repent, as soon as we realize we have been less than faithful. Such a heart is tender toward Him and able to have sweet fellowship with Him that is beyond the imagination of those who are rebellious.

I can’t remember when I haven’t had an understanding of God’s omniscience, but I can’t say that’s kept me from deliberate sin. How foolish! By God’s grace I have tasted real fellowship with Him, and that has made me hungry for more, and I don’t want anything that will get in the way of that. It is indeed a comfort that God sees everything and that I can leave “payback” in His hands. (Romans 12:19) I am to seek to keep God in my awareness as much as I am in His (though doing it completely is impossible) and so live a life pleasing to Him. If I will do that, He will use me for His purposes and I will receive and experience blessings far beyond anything this world could ever imagine, much less provide.

Father, thank You for the miracle of knowing You. You didn’t have to make it possible, but You created us for fellowship with You. Thank You for that choice on Your part. Help me choose fellowship with You over anything and everything else, and lead others into that same choice, so that Your house may be full (Luke 14:23) for Your pleasure and glory. Thank You. Praise God!

I do not know of any atheists who are weirded out by the idea of a god being able to hear our every thought. It there were actually a god, a benevolent god, that would be a good thing.
